FROM THE DESK OF THE PRINCIPAL.....

The past few weeks at Northwood Middle School have been a great success. We are off to a positive start to the new school year and some of our new procedures that were put in place for this school year seem to be working very well. Our new sixth graders seem to be adjusting well to Middle School and our returning students are getting used to the new policies and expectations. We have several new faces at Northwood Middle School this year including: Sapna Shah - French Carrie Filetti - Chorus / General Music Paul Brass -ì 8th Grade Reading / LA Christine Hjorth - 7th Grade Reading / LA Betsy Iversen - 7th Grade Reading / LA Tama Ostrow - 7th Grade Reading / LA Kelly Maher - Student Services Facilitator in charge of discipline/supervision Brenda Shafer- 1 on1 Assistant Monique DeSmet - Cafeteria Nora Combs - Cafeteria We welcome all of these new staff members on board and hopefully you will have an opportunity to meet and work with all of them. I would like to remind all parents that we have extended the NWMS office hours to better meet your needs. The office is now open from 7:30am-4:30pm. At least one secretary will be available to assist you during these office hours. However, we still ask that if you are attending an after school sporting event in the gym that you please enter the building through Door #9 located by the gymnasium. If you are new to NWMS I would like to remind you to please check out the NWMS website for up to date schedules, dates and information. Also, I typically send home a Warhawk Times newsletter once per month throughout the school year, highlighting certain topics and giving reminders to parents about upcoming events and deadlines. Should you have any questions you can always contact the office at 338-4900. Should you have specific questions regarding a specific class your child is taking please contact the teacher directly to further discuss your questions.

Congratulations NWMS Staff and Students!

It is with great pleasure that I congratulate both the staff and students at NWMS for their outstanding efforts on the ISAT (Illinois Standards Achievement Test) tests that students took last March. We were recently informed by the state of Illinois that NWMS has MADE AYP (adequate yearly progress) on the 2008 ISAT test under state and federal guidelines.Alter not making AYP in several subgroups during the 06-07 school year, NWMS implemented or changed certain instructional programs, staff trainings, and curricular enhancements during the 07-08 school year. As a result, NWMS successfully made AYP as an overall student population, as well as in all subgroups on the March ISAT tests. This outstanding achievement is one to be recognized and celebrated and I am thrilled to thank and congratulate all the students and staff for their hard work, dedication and tremendous effort to help NWMS reach this goal!
