FROM THE DESK OF THE PRINCIPAL.....
Believe it or not we are already 5 weeks into the school year and we have reached the mid-term progress report point of the first quarter. Progress reports were finalized in Friday and will be mailed home to parents today or tomorrow. If you do not receive your child's progress report before the end of the week please contact the school.
As we continue to move forward at the rapid pace that we have already seen I want to remind parents of a few helpful tips that you can do at home to help your child be more successful at school...
- Talk with your child daily about what is happening at school, how their day was, and any problems they might be having, This open communication quite often can go a long way in helping a child feel comfortable with sharing information when they truly need support.
- Set a time each day for homework to be completed. The time may vary for your child and what works for your family. Some students need to do it right away after school or it won't get done; others need a break from school and doing it after dinner or before bed works best. However, research shows being consistent and having a set time that it gets done each and every day will help your child learn structure and routine and your child will more consistently get homework done on time and his/her grades will improve.
- Keep up to date on your child's grades. Communicate with your child's teachers. Ask questions when you are unsure of something and check your child's grades using eSchool regularly. By doing this you will be able to stay on top of your child of they get behind. Don't wait until report cards, conferences or mid-terms because by then your child may be so far behind or in a hole that it may be difficult to get out of.
- Last but not least, spend quality time with your child. Whether it is going outside for a walk, going shopping or just watching a show together. Spending quality time one on one with your child goes a long way in building that relationship that is needed to help them be as successful as possible.

Picture Re-Take Day is scheduled for Thursday, October 25th. If you have not yet returned your picture order and you plan to order pictures please do so ASAP
NEW GYMNASIUM FOOD/DRINK POLICY
This year Northwood Middle School has adopted a policy that does not allow any students, parents or guests to eat or drink in either gymnasium. If you purchase something at the concession stand there is a table available in the hallway for you to eat or drink at before returning to the gym.The only exception to this policy is the actual athletes participating in the event are allowed water bottles on the bench.Your support of this policy is greatly appreciated
PICKING UP STUDENTS & ATHLETES AFTER EVENTS & GAMES We ask that parents please pick up students and athletes after all games, practices and events within 15 minutes of the conclusion of the game. We do not want students standing around the outside of the buildings unsupervised as this type of situation only leads to potential problems.
CHEERLEADING TRYOUTS This is a reminder to all parents and students that after school on Thursday, October 4th we will have our cheerleading tryouts at NWMS.
DANCE The Northwood Student Council will sponsor their first dance of the year this Friday, October 5th from 4-6pm..Tickets will be $3 and available before school, during lunch and study hall. The theme of the first dance is Carnival!
HOMEWORK The NWMS rule of thumb regarding homework is 10 minutes for every grade per night. Therefore, the average child should spend approximately 60 minutes per night on homework as a 6th grader, 70 minutes per night as a 7th grader and 80 minutes per night as an 8th grader. Remember, this is a general rule of thumb and some students may be able to complete their homework in a shorter time period than this, while others may need longer than this, but overall this is a general guideline
WARHAWK TIMES ON THE WEB Just in case your child accidentally forgets to bring you home a copy of the Warhawk Times or you misplace a copy you want to refer to, you can now checkout all copies of the Times on the NWMS website.
THE PTO NEEDS YOU!!!!!!!!!! Currently, the Northwood PTO is non-existent for the 07-08 school year because we need people to help out and fill our vacant Board positions. The PTO does not have a President or a Secretary at this time.Without these vital positions the PTO will not function. Please consider stepping up to help as you can see from this list, the PTO does a ton of things for the students and school and without your help in filling these positions these extras will not happenā family fun night,
- putting on the entire 8th grade dance,
- providing the reception for families after 8th grade graduation,
- as well as providing a fund raiser to raise funds for things such as: Challenge Corps,
- Mentoring program,
- archery equipment for PE, bike helmets for PE,
- supports the Pumpkin Run,
- baby manikins for 8th grade health unit,
- board games used in the classrooms for vocabulary, spelling, and phonics,
- clay for art classes,
- 1/2 the cost of assignment notebooks, books for literature circle,
- the rolling computer lab as well as 5 Dell computers televisions, and projectors purchased last year for classroom use,
- poms for the pompon squad.
These are just some of the things the PTO has provided over the last few years! If you would like to become a part of the PTO and help keep these wonderful extras happening for our students please contact Laura Brokaw at 815-337-9601 or Mr. Wakitsch at the school.
